| Yasmeen
Mustaklim was born on March 17, 1972 in Edmonton,
Alberta, Canada with fashion in her blood. Yasmeen’s
grandfather was a renowned fashion designer. Clothes
from all eras were always around the house, carefully
kept and admired. As soon as Yasmeen was old enough
to work she eagerly made her way into the world
of fashion the same way that many other 16 year
olds find their first job: at the mall. After
being quickly promoted from sales to management
to the visual merchandise, Yasmeen formalized
her training at FIDM and graduated with an AA
in Merchandise Marketing with an emphasis on Product
Development. Yasmeen has a business mind as well
and really enjoyed the melding of two worlds:
the fabulousness of fashion and the exhilarating
rush of business and money.
Before she even graduated
in 1993, her store was in the process of opening
and Odd Spot Deluxe opened its doors in April
of 1993. One of the first and only boutiques of
its kind, Odd Spot Deluxe was just the beginning
of the inspiration. After working for a few sportswear
companies, Yasmeen also wanted to try her hand
at designing her own line. At first she partnered
with an existing line called Weedwear, calling
her girls line Ladybuds, partially owned by hip
hop entrepreneur, Danny Boy, but soon went off
completely on her own with a line called Agent
Angel. Worn by celebrities such as Daryl Hannah,
Kate Hudson and trendsetters around the country,
Agent Angel sold at fashion forward boutiques
around the country including Patricia Field in
NYC and Swell in LA. But even that wasn’t
enough.
One day, Yasmeen was asked
if she could bring her line down to a photo shoot.
It was a blast! And that was the beginning of
Yasmeen the stylist. Music videos, commercials
and photo shoots were again, just the beginning.
When Yasmeen teamed with famed New York tailor,
Savoia, to costume design a film for longtime
friend of Savoia, Summer of Sam writer Victor
Collichio, she knew that this was finally her
passion. There are many other mediums that are
far more glamorous, but being part of a huge collaboration
like a film was and is the ultimate; to help actors
to do their job. To help the Writer and Director
and see their dreams come alive. To inspire the
DP. To help make characters that the audience
bonds with. That was love. Her
tasteful eye and her love of collaborating creatively
with people has given her a way to help contribute
to this amazing process. What was once a love
of fashion has evolved for Yasmeen into a love
of filmmaking. Her film credits include: Beat,
Indocumentados,
Welcome,
High Times Potluck,
Unbeatable Harold,
The Ron White Show,
Chasing Ghosts,
Cult,
Out At The Wedding
and Visioneers.
